9th Age Skills

Terminology and Operations
  • Identify key terms that will aid in the students’ understanding of age-appropriate software and hardware
  • Use correct typing techniques (taught via software tutorials)
  • Type 30 words per minute
  • Know what programs to use for different tasks
  • Understand how to use multiple programs for a single task and how to make them work together
  • Save files in logical locations (local drives vs. network drives)
  • Locate and retrieve saved files
  • Discuss other storage options (flash drive, external hard drive, Drop Box, etc.)

Creativity
  • Format text, colors, styles, paragraphs, margins, etc. in Microsoft Word via letters, stories, paragraphs, etc.
  • Format images and clipart once inserted into documents
  • Create drawings & illustrations using basic graphics programs
  • Incorporate creations into several programs and projects
  • Develop simple publications using Microsoft Office products and learn to save/edit/print documents
  • Use mapping software to create diagrams which will spark creative discussions and will aid in the writing of compositions
  • Introduce the digital camera and digital video camera (take photos and transfer to laptop)
  • Incorporate photos and videos into specific projects (using MovieMaker, Photo Story, etc.)
  • Begin to manipulate photos and edit short video clips

Communication & Collaboration
  • Work in small groups to complete projects and share ideas
  • Present projects to the class via slideshows 
  • Deliver oral and visual presentations using the SmartBoard
  • Use video conferencing to chat with other classes, family members, etc.
  • Understand the way technology influences how we communicate with each other

Research & Evaluation
  • Use search engines to find information about topics covered in class
  • Identify useful web pages, links, etc.
  • Show students how to bookmark favorite/useful sites
  • Develop advanced search techniques (image searches, news searches, map searches, etc.)
  • Learn the purpose and use for wikis and blogs

Problem Solving
  • Expand on basic troubleshooting techniques to include specific issues relating to software and hardware
  • Learn troubleshooting techniques for specific software programs
  • Discuss common techniques that can be used for a variety of “tough situations”
  • Involve students in helping classmates troubleshoot problems

Digital Citizenship
  • Exhibit responsible computer & internet use
  • General Cyber Safety
  • Cyber Bullying Awareness
  • Respect lab space and equipment (laptop cart, SmartBoards, cameras, etc.)
